Calculator & Search Engine Optomisation for Glass Art NZ

Recently the firm I work for got a job to rewrite the Online Quotation calculator for a local tauranga Painted Glass company called GlassArt.

We took the existing design and completely recoded the site, the original company had done such a job that it was easier to start over than try and use the mess that it was currently written in. We then started the Online Glass Splashback calculator which allows both registered wholesalers and retail customers to generate a quote for the various options that they can get a painted glass splashback for their kitchen or bathroom.

The system will generate you a price for supply, install, holes, supply only, colour choices, and delivery area throughout New Zealand. then email both you and GlassArt a Nice PDF quote.

Our next job was some simple Search Engine Optimisation, Our copywriter Sue re-wrote a lot of the main content, and we implemented a few legitimate SEO tricks to help the site rank well.

Our first step was to crete a single page for a separate domain name http://www.glass-splashbacks.co.nz/, one idea was when that domain is called, it would load a page with in the GlassArt site, I would have used a .htaccess rule like

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^glass\-splashbacks\.co\.nz$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^.*$ http://www.glassartnz.co.nz/glass-splashbacks [P]

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.glass\-splashbacks\.co\.nz$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^.*$ http://www.glassartnz.co.nz/glass-splashbacks [P]

The problem with this, would be google would treat this a duplicate content as the content would exist exactly the same on two domains http://www.glassartnz.co.nz/glass-splashbacks and http://www.glass-splashbacks.co.nz/.

What we ended up in doing, was create a complete separate domain and site with that single page specific content, then linking to the particular relevant pages within the
GlassArt site.

I have added Google analytics to both domains, so lets give this a little time and we will see if the ranking increases. :)
